    Is TDX For You?

    © 2004 Ed Presnall

It is hard … if it was easy everyone would do it. Think about that before you jump into the waiting list of exhibitors trying to earn a TDX title.

The test itself is almost twice as long as the TD track you successfully negotiated with your dog. But more importantly than the length are the other contributing factors that make the test hard.
Obstacles – ditches, roads, tree lines, heavy or light woods, heavy brush, swamps, desert sand, rocks, fences in an assortment of flavors such as wood, rock, stone, barbed-wire, gullys, arroyos or almost anything else in the field your judges can find to challenge you and your dog.

Age of Track – minimum of three and maximum of five hours old. This may be a drastic jump in confidence for you and your dog from those thirty to forty minute old TD tracks you were successful on.

Cover – depending on your region, the cover could range from desert to swamp to mowed lawn to chest to head-high range grasses and brush. Plan on multiple cover changes along the way, sometimes fighting your way to follow your dog through thorns, tangling vines and boot-sucking mud.

Multiple Articles – You will be required to find three additional articles (a total of four) along your track.

Cross-Tracks – in addition to the normal animals, humans and other wildlife that may march across your track, the judges will plot two separate places along the track where they will have two people walk across the track. Your dog must be prepared to ignore these new scents which are, just to make you life a little harder, only ½ half as old as the track layer’s track your dog is following.
Only you can answer the question of whether you can physically make it through the regiment required to train for and participate in this test. Before you take up a slot in a test which might be utilized by someone better prepared to meet the arduous requirements, make sure your dog is trained in each of the above areas.
