You have successfully marched out of the field holding the glove from your TD track proudly for all to see. Because of the awesome performance of your dog, the accolades of your friends and your suddenly swollen ego, you decide to enter the next TDX test and fly through that title too.
Whoa … let’s thinks about a few things first.
Statistics show the following information:
- 845 dogs competed in 155 Tracking Dog Tests
464 of those dogs earned Tracking Dog Titles, a 54.9% pass ratio
- 534 dogs competed in 130 Tracking Dog Excellent Tests
96 of those dogs earned Tracking Dog Titles, a 17.9% pass ratio
Without having access to the AKC entry database we can only use what we hear on the various newsgroups and email lists as “gospel” that less than five percent (of the 17.9%), or about 4 of the 96 dogs who passed did so on their first attempt.
Independent (and somewhat unscientific studies) show that over 60% of all dogs entered in Tracking Dog Excellent Tests failed either at the start or on the first leg before the first turn.
It is time to train, before you enter a test, not after you fail a few times.
