  • The Puppy Tracking Primer by Carolyn Krause (www.firedogenterprises.com) is a great booklet by an accomplished tracker.

  • Tracking: A Practical Guide for TD and TDX by the Tracking Club of Massachusetts is a concise introduction and nice booklet. Available from the Tracking Club of Massachusetts.

  • Practical Scent Dog Training by Lue Button is a good general introduction to scent work.

  • Following Ghosts, Developing the Tracking Relationship by John Rice & Suzanne Clothier is an easy to read booklet.

  • About Track Laying: Guidelines for Dog Tracking Enthusiasts, by Betty Mueller is a very handy, very well produced booklet.

  • Tracking: From the Beginning, by Gary Patterson. Based largely on drive theory and is mostly concerned with Schutzhund-style footstep tracking, but it has some good hints for AKC-style tracking.

  • Keeping Track: A Record of Your Dog's Progress in the Tracking Field, (Mueller Publications). This nifty package includes blank maps, mobile map-maker and Pocket Tracker.

  • Tracking From the Ground Up, by Sandy Ganz and Susan Boyd (Show-Me Publications). An easy-to-use resource.

  • Tracking Fundamentals by Sandy Ganz

  • Tracking Dog: Theory and Methods, by Glen R. Johnson (Arner Publications). The "bible" of restrictive tracking. This classic book is back in print.

  • Enthusiastic Tracking, The Step-by-step Training Manual, William R. Sanders. Presents a familiar structured training program. If you liked Glen Johnson's methods, you'll fit right in with this book.

  • Practical Tracking for Practically Everyone, by Julie Hogan and Donna Thompson. A good how-to manual.

  • Fun Nosework For Dogs, Hunter. Exercises and games to help your dog improve scenting skills.

  • It Only Takes a Scent, Spencer. A practical and fun approach to teaching tracking.

  • Scent and the Scenting Dog, by William G. Syrotuck (Arner Publications). A very technical manual about the dynamics of scent and how dogs perform this amazing feat. Read this after you're completely hooked on the sport.

  • Schutzhund: Theory and Methods by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hilliard (Howell Book House). How to teach a dog to track in the Schutzhund "style."

  • Training the Competition Tracking Dog, Leerburg Video Productions. This tape provides an excellent description of scent dynamics in different types of fields.

  • Training Police Tracking Dogs, Leerburg Video Productions. Useful information for those interested in Schutzhund style variable surface tracking.
