NOTE - The following is an overview of the requirements and specifications of this test. This is not a complete set of the regulations regarding this test. For further information TCoW recommends that you visit the American Kennel Club and view the entire Tracking Regulations for this event.
Tracking Dog Test (TD)
The fundamental features of a TD test are the dog's ability to follow a track laid by a person under a variety of conditions on moderate terrain and find an article dropped by that person.
A dog may continue to participate in this test after it has earned the titles TD or TDX or VST. Dogs not holding a Tracking Dog title shall be given priority for entry in the test by the tracking test secretary.
Certification A written statement must accompany each entry for a licensed or member tracking test for any dog which has not previously passed an American Kennel Club TD test. This statement must be dated within one year of the date the test is to be held, signed by a person approved (or Provisional Tracking Judge) by The American Kennel Club to judge tracking tests, and must certify that the dog has satisfactorily performed a certification test.
Tracking Dog Title (TD) The American Kennel Club will issue a Tracking Dog certificate to registered dogs, and to dogs with ILP's (Indefinite Listing Privledge) or Limited Registration, and will permit use of the letters "TD" after the name of each dog which has been certified by two judges to have passed a licensed or member club TD test or at a combined TD/TDX test, or at a combined TD/VST test or a TD/ TDX/VST test.
Track Requirements The following are the restrictions and minimum requirements for a TD track:
- The track shall be at least 440 yards and not more than 500 yards in length.
- The length of each of the legs of the track shall be at least 50 yards.
- The scent on the track shall be not less than thirty (30) minutes nor more than two (2) hours old.
- A total of three (3) to five (5) turns shall be used. Both left and right 90 degree angle turns shall be used. No acute angle turns are to be used. The first turn must be more than thirty (30) yards from the second flag.
- At least two (2) of the turns shall be right angle (90 degree) turns, and there should be more than two (2) such turns.
- At least two (2) of the right angle turns shall be well out in the open, where there are no fences or boundaries to guide the dog.
- No part of the track shall follow any fence or boundary within 15 yards of such fence or boundary.
- No part of the track may be within 50 yards of any other part of the same track.
- Consecutive parallel tracks shall not be used.
- No part of any track shall be laid within 75 yards of another track. However, with two tracks going in opposite directions from the same area, the starting flags may be as close as 50 yards to each other.
- A track shall not cross a body of water or a paved road. No TD track should have changes of cover that would be suitable for a TDX obstacle. No conflicting (cross) tracks shall be used.
Article for a Tracking Dog Test (TD) Chapter 2, Section 6, sets forth the criteria for articles. In a TD test, the article shall be a glove or a wallet.
Start The start shall have a flag at the beginning, and a second flag, indicating the direction of the first leg, 30 yards from the first flag.
